January 23, 2025

Winter Weather GFX

EUNICE, La –    After accessing the campus and local area and with freezing temperatures expected to continue at night throughout south Louisiana to create icy road conditions, the LSU Eunice campus will be closed on Friday, January 24.  This closure affects LSUE’s satellite campuses in Lafayette and Alexandria.

Students should be advised that because of the closure, all late registration, financial clearance, final date to add/change and 100% refund for dropping a course by 11:59PM deadlines will be delayed from Tuesday, January 21 to Monday, January 27.

The LSU Eunice campus is expected to re-open for normal business and instruction hours beginning Monday, January 27.   It is important during these days of campus closure that the LSUE community monitors their e-mail.  LSUE students should also check myCourses on myLSUE to review any coursework and/or notes from your professors.

LSU Eunice officials will continue to monitor the forecasts and local conditions with any updates being announced through e-mail, social media, and www.lsue.edu.

Winter Weather Safety Tips

As we prepare for the arrival of wintry weather, we want to remind you of the steps we can all take to stay safe and prepared, especially since weather can have significant impacts on daily activities, including travel, classes, and campus operations.

Stay Informed:

  • Monitor official LSUE communications via email, LSUE text alerts, LSUE.edu, and official LSUE social media platforms for updates on campus operations.
  • Check the National Weather Service and local news outlets for the latest forecasts.

Plan Ahead for Travel:

  • Avoid driving if road conditions are icy or hazardous. If you must travel, reduce speed, increase following distance, and brake gently to avoid skidding.
  • Keep an emergency kit in your vehicle, including blankets, water, snacks, a flashlight, and a fully charged phone.
  • Be aware of potential bridge and overpass closures, which tend to freeze before roadways.

Dress Appropriately:

  • Layer clothing to stay warm and dry. Wear a hat, gloves, and waterproof shoes or boots to prevent cold-related illnesses.
  • Protect your face, hands, and ears from prolonged exposure to cold temperatures.

Campus Safety Measures:

  • Use caution when walking on sidewalks or pathways that may be slippery.

Prepare for Potential Power Outages:

  • Have flashlights and batteries on hand in case of outages. Avoid using candles to prevent fire risks.
  • Charge your electronic devices in advance and ensure you have backup power sources, if possible.

Check on Others:

  • Look out for friends, classmates, and colleagues, especially those who may be new to our region and unfamiliar with winter weather conditions.

By taking these simple precautions, we can all contribute to a safer campus community.
