LSUE Partners With LSU Alexandria For Surgical Technology Expansion

 

LSU Eunice and LSU Alexandria have agreed to a partnership to expand the LSUE Surgical Technology program to the LSUA campus, it was announced on Wednesday.  

“This is another great example of how collaboration can be used to help benefit not only our local areas, but the entire state of Louisiana,” LSU Eunice Chancellor Dr. Nancee Sorenson said.  “We are proud to stand together as one LSU system in our pursuit of improving the lives of our citizens.”

Dr. Paul Coreil, LSU Alexandria Chancellor added, “The walls have come down between campuses in the LSU system.  When any of us identify a need in our community, we are happy to reach out across the state to find ways to find a solution.  LSUE has been a willing partner to bring Surgical Technology to central Louisiana.  We are grateful for their long-standing support of our community.”

Students from either the LSUE or LSUA campus who have earned 26 hours of prerequisite courses, meet the admissions requirements, and are selected by the Surgical Technology program will be admitted.  Once accepted, they can continue their studies in Alexandria or at the Lafayette campus of the Surgical Technology program.

The satellite campus of the LSUE Surgical Technology program will be housed in the LSUA Allied Health.  CHRISTUS St. Frances Cabrini has donated instrument sets for students and will be an Alexandria clinical side along with the CHRISTUS Central Louisiana Surgical Hospital and Rapides General Hospital.

“These types of partnerships are something LSU Alexandria Dean Haywood Joiner and I have dreamt of for nearly two decades, and we are so thankful to see this become a reality,” LSU Eunice Dean of Health Sciences and Business Technology Dottie McDonald said.  “We are grateful for health care partners that share this forward thinking of trying to serve our community in innovative ways.”

A survey of the healthcare organizations in central Louisiana is conducted annually by the Department of Allied Health at Louisiana State University at Alexandria (LSUA) to determine the need for allied health professionals in the region. The most recent survey indicated a growing need for Surgical Technologists along with a host of other technical professions in Allied Health. Prior to the agreement, there was no local training program for Surgical Technology in the central Louisiana area.
