Lady Bengals Return to World Series
The LSU Eunice softball team has been named the No. 1 seed for the 2014 NJCAA Division II National Championship Tournament, set to begin on Wednesday afternoon.
The Lady Bengals (58-2, No. 1-ranked team in the country) are coming off their fourth consecutive Region 23 Championship and are the national tournament's top seed for the second year in a row.
Overall, the 16-team bracket will feature 10 teams that were in the final Top 20 poll of the season back on April 23, as well as two additional schools that were receiving votes just outside the rankings.
In their opening round game in the national tournament, LSU Eunice will face No. 16-seeded Delaware Tech-Owens (27-3), the Region 19 and District K Champions, in a 1:30 p.m. start.
The Lady Bengals would not face No. 2-seeded Jones County Junior College (48-4, ranked No. 2 in the country) until the fourth round. LSU Eunice defeated Jones Country twice last weekend en route to the Region 23 title.
The NJCAA National Championship Tournament will be held in Clinton, MS at the Traceway Park complex, beginning with eight games Wednesday before the double-elimination tournament concludes on Saturday.
The week kicks off with opening ceremonies and a pre-tournament banquet on Tuesday night, before the eight opening round games are played Wednesday at 1:30 and 3:30 p.m. on the four fields at the Traceway Park complex.
Following the opening round schedule, there will be a Home Run Derby at approximately 6 p.m. on Wednesday night that will be followed by a barbecue social at 7 p.m. and a fireworks display at 8:15 p.m. All of those activities will take place at Traceway Park.
Closing ceremonies will take place at the end of the championship game on Saturday.
