Path 2 Math Success

Louisiana State University Eunice will provide students a unique way to learn mathematics. Path 2 Math Success will help the university increase student learning in developmental mathematics starting this fall.

LSU Eunice is currently undergoing its reaffirmation for accreditation with the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges which is a mandatory process every ten years. Part of the reaffirmation process is developing a quality enhancement plan (QEP) to increase student learning.

Path 2 Math Success was born out of the QEP development process and will begin with MATH 0001 in the fall and expand to MATH 0002 in the spring.

For the fall semester, the Path 2 Math Success will be available to new students with ACT scores of 16 in mathematics.

Path 2 Math Success uses computers and video lectures that are available at any time. An instructor and tutor act in support of the computer lessons, answering questions for students in need. The computer assigns homework based on errors during quizzes. Attendance is required.

"MATH 0001 will be modular in nature, so quizzes are over a smaller amount of material," said Dr. Paul Fowler, director of development education at LSU Eunice. "Students take a pretest for each module that covers one or two concepts rather than an entire chapter. If they score 80 percent or higher on the pretest they may move on to the next module."

Students must master one module before advancing to another, and student finishing coursework early may begin the next course or choose not to attend class.

The Path 2 Math Success Program is being modeled after similar successful programs in Tennessee and Alabama which have seen substantial increases in student success and shorten the amount of time students are spending in developmental mathematics.
